Lilongwe, Malawi – The Pan African Parliament (PAP) has expressed its deepest condolences to the government and people of Malawi following the sudden passing of Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima in a helicopter accident on Monday.
In a statement, PAP President Chief Fortune Zephania Charumbira described Chilima as a “gallant son of the soil” who dedicated his life to public service, inspiring hope among the youth and promoting inclusion in governance.
“Africa has lost a shining star, who sacrificed the comforts and opulence of a thriving career in the
private sector to dedicate himself to a life of service as the Vice President of Malawi.”
“A larger-than-life character who brought style and swagger into public office, the late Hon. Chilima’s meteoric rise to the second highest public office in Malawi, inspired hope among the youth and rekindled the zeal for youth participation and inclusion in the national governance framework, ” Charumbira said.
Chilima, 45, was a prominent figure in Malawian politics and a key ally of President Lazarus Chakwera. He was known for his charisma, vision, and passion for development, which earned him a massive following among the youth and ordinary Malawians.
The Vice President’s death has sent shockwaves across the continent, with leaders and citizens alike paying tribute to his memory. “We are devastated by this loss,” said President Chakwera in a statement. “Saulos was more than a colleague; he was a brother and a friend. His legacy will live on in our hearts and in the progress we will continue to make as a nation.”
Funeral arrangements for the late Vice President are yet to be announced, but tributes are pouring in from across the continent and beyond.
As Malawi mourns the loss of its beloved leader, the Pan African Parliament stands in solidarity with the nation and the Chilima family, celebrating a life that was lived in service to others.
