As the World continues to battle against climate change, learning institutions are now taking the lead in preparing for a resilient and sustainable future, under the banner: “Nothing For Us Without Us.”

The Forestry Commission has over the recent times partnered Zimbabwe’s  Primary and Secondary Schools in a bid to create awareness and advancing climate action goals at local levels.

This publication witnessed a tree planting exercise held at Quinton School, a top notch learning centre in Chitungwiza. The occasion coincided with the National Tree Planting Exercise which falls on every 4th of December annually.

This year’s commemorations runs under the theme: “Trees and Forests for Ecosystem Restoration and Improved Livelihoods”

In an interview with Tafadzwa Chikasha, Quinton School Chief Executive Officer, expressed positive sentiments in championing a tree planting exercise and partnering the Forestry Commission in demonstrating a national cause.

“The fact that Forestry Commission supported us in our tree planting exercise shows that we are not alone in this journey. Climate Change is affecting everyone so it is important for learning institutions to also take the lead in demonstrating fight against climate change by planting trees,” he said.

Mr Chirasha also said , his learning institutions have made it a priority to plant trees whenever they hold important events such as prize giving and infantry graduations.

In a statement, Forestry Commission indicated that National Tree Planting Day is important to raise awareness on the importance of trees as forests for economic development, human livelihoods and the health of the environment in the context of climate change.

“National Tree Planting Day Commemoration is a day to launch and raise awareness on the importance of trees and forests for socio economic development, human livelihoods and the health of the environment in the context of climate change. This marks the official beginning of the 2023 – 2024 tree planting season.”
