JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA – As South Africans prepare to head to the polls on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, the Pan African Parliament has issued a statement wishing the nation a successful and peaceful electoral process.

In a statement released on the eve of the elections, H.E. Chief Fortune Zephania Charumbira, President of the Pan African Parliament, commended the Government, political parties, and the people of South Africa for promoting tolerance and respect for divergent political opinions. This, he noted, has created a conducive environment for political parties to campaign without hindrance.

The Pan African Parliament recognizes the importance of periodic elections in protecting the rights and interests of citizens, and urged the people of South Africa and all political parties to continue exercising restraint as they cast their votes and await the results.

“We are confident that the outcome of the elections will be a genuine reflection of the will of the people, which must be respected,” said President Charumbira.

The statement concluded with a message of support for South Africa’s democratic process, saying, “Long Live the Rainbow Nation!! Long Live Pluralistic Democracy!!”

The Pan African Parliament’s endorsement of South Africa’s electoral process is a significant show of support for the country’s democratic institutions and its people. As the nation heads to the polls, this message of encouragement is a reminder of the importance of peaceful and credible elections in upholding the rights and freedoms of all citizens.
