The recent meeting between Musk and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent shockwaves through the telecoms industry, as it hints at StarLink’s impending arrival in the country ¹. This development comes hot on the heels of StarLink’s approval by POTRAZ in Zimbabwe, which has left telecoms giants like NetOne and Econet scrambling to stay competitive.

StarLink’s African Expansion

StarLink has been aggressively expanding its footprint across Africa, with successful launches in Madagascar, Sierra Leone, and Botswana ¹. The company has also received operating licenses in several other countries, including Nigeria, Rwanda, Malawi, Kenya, Mozambique, and Zambia.

Implications for South Africa

In South Africa, StarLink’s entry is expected to shake up the telecoms market, offering top-notch services at affordable rates ². This will likely put pressure on local players to improve their services and pricing. AfriForum, a civil rights organization, has been advocating for StarLink’s approval, citing its potential to improve rural safety and communication ²[3).

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has proposed strict criteria for StarLink’s licensing, including a 30% BEE requirement ².
